What is a DJ contract?
A DJ contract is a written agreement between a DJ and a client that locks in a performance: the date, venue and hours, the equipment each side provides, the fee and deposit, and what happens when plans change. Like wedding photography, DJ work is a fixed-date booking — the event happens once, the date can only be sold to one client, and a no-show or a last-minute cancellation can’t be fixed after the fact. That’s why the working parts of this contract are the deposit, the cancellation schedule and the substitute clause, not just the performance details.

What should a DJ contract include?
A DJ contract should name both parties, pin down the event date, venue and exact performance hours, state who provides sound and lighting equipment and what the venue must supply (power, space, load-in access), set the deposit and balance schedule, define overtime rates, and spell out what happens on cancellation or if the DJ can't perform. Music preferences — must-play and do-not-play lists — belong in the contract too, so the playlist conversation happens before the event, not on the dance floor.
Why is the DJ deposit non-refundable?
Booking a DJ takes a specific date off the market. Once a DJ commits to your event, they turn down every other inquiry for that day, and a late cancellation rarely leaves time to rebook it. The non-refundable deposit compensates for that lost availability — it's the industry-standard way of making the reservation real, and it's credited toward the total fee rather than being an extra charge.
What happens if the DJ cancels or gets sick?
This template's substitute clause covers exactly that scenario: the DJ makes reasonable efforts to provide a comparable substitute — briefed on your timeline, must-play list and do-not-play list — subject to your approval. If no acceptable substitute can be found, everything you've paid, including the deposit, is refunded in full. The DJ's liability is capped at that refund, which is the standard allocation of risk for a single-date performance booking.
Who is responsible for venue sound restrictions?
The client, under this template. Venues and local noise ordinances can limit amplified music hours or volume, and only the client (who books the venue) can confirm what's allowed. If the venue or local rules force the DJ to lower the volume or stop early, the DJ complying with those rules isn't a breach of contract — so it pays to check your venue's sound policy before signing both contracts.
